There is nothing new about stalking or the menace of unwanted attention. The brooding and obsessive Heathcliff in Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights was the first documented stalker whose all-consuming passion ultimately destroyed him, and everything that he touched.

What is new though is the staggering fact that stalking only became a criminal offence under the 1997 Protection from Harassment Act. Its impact can be anywhere on the scale between irritating to life-threatening, but all victims have one thing in common: they want it to stop.
